Jorgen Gammelgaard belonged to a generation of skilful furniture designers who all learned their craft in the time-honored Danish apprenticeship tradition. He was the first designer to receive the annual awards from both the Danish Design Council and The Council for Arts and Crafts. In 1987 he was appointed Professor of furniture design at the Danish Royal Academy.
